Breakdown and Damage Cover for your Fridge-Freezer

Fridge freezers save a lot of room in your kitchen, as they limit the need for two separate appliances. Everything is stored handily in one place.

Regarding mechanical operation, however, there’s twice as much that can go wrong. The more an appliance has to do the more likely it is to give up on us suddenly. Insurance helps you cover any of the unfortunate costs which come with such an incident.

We compare the best insurance for your:

  • Integrated fridge freezer
  • Freestanding Fridge Freezer
  • Multi-door fridge freezer

The Benefits of Comprehensive Cover

Appliance insurance will likely cover any costs which come about from having to repair your goods suddenly.

Most providers have a 24/7 call centre which you can contact should something suddenly go wrong, and the person on the other end of the phone can talk you through any DIY troubleshooting which may detect and resolve the problem. If this is unsuccessful, they will refer the issue onwards.

An expert engineer will visit your home and take the relevant action regarding repairs and fix the glitch. Callout and labour charges can be two of the unsuspected costs of getting an appliance up and running again before you even know what the problem is. Having these covered by insurance is a relief. The cost of any parts will also be covered up to a limit.

What Will My Insurance Policy Cover?

Your insurance plan will offer protection against the costs associated with breakdowns, from labour charges to the price of replacement parts. There’s often a boundary, but even if you have to put some money towards the full cost, you will still be paying a lot less than if insurance wasn’t in place.

If your appliance cannot be repaired, the majority of modern plans will offer to replace it with a like-for-like model. Failing this, you may be given a voucher to put towards a new one, totalling the current market value of your appliance.

Fridge freezers are sophisticated machines, tasked with both keeping food cold and frozen at very different temperatures. They’re often pretty packed, too, so there is a lot of food that would go to waste should they give up on you. If the food is not adequately maintained, it isn’t safe to eat.

The most commonly encountered problem with these white goods is that they become unable to regulate their temperature. Being unable to find or fix the problem yourself means that a professional has to be called, and labour rates can be high, so having these covered is a real peace of mind. The fan, evaporator, thermostat or electronics may need replacing, and attempting this yourself could cause more harm than good.

The door seal may also be faulty, allowing cooled air to escape. It may seem unlikely, but to replace such parts can be very expensive. In some cases, maybe even as expensive as the original appliance. Insurance can cover such occurrences.

Are There Any Incidents Not Covered?

Replacement parts such as fuses will not be included. So, if the bulb needs replacing in your refrigerator, you would have to follow manufacturer’s instructions to exchange it yourself (or pay for a handyman to come and do it should you not know where to start).

Not maintaining the upkeep of your fridge cannot be covered. Necessary maintenance should be carried out by you regularly, such as cleaning your fridge and defrosting the freezer if it doesn’t do it automatically. You can’t claim for a bad smell or a problem which has come as a result of not cleaning/checking your appliance.

Most accidental or cosmetic damage can also not be covered. Any dents in the outer casing of your goods, or scratched doors/shelving will have to be paid for in full by yourself. Insurance only covers mechanical faults which stop the product working to its full potential.

If your fridge freezer needs to be entirely replaced, any extra costs such as delivery, installation and removing the old appliance will likely not be included in the overall plan protection. Most retailers and delivery companies will offer to take your old device away at an extra cost, which is worth considering given the difficulty of doing it yourself.

The cost of any wasted produce can’t be claimed. You may be able to cover this loss through your home contents insurance, however.

FAQs

Do I need to insure my Fridge Freezer?

These appliances usually cost well over £100, and they’re expected to last anywhere between five and ten years. The better they are maintained, the longer this gets.

You don’t want such an investment lasting only two or three years. If it needs repairing and you can’t afford repairs or a replacement, you could be facing a bit of a problem. Repairs can cost more than the original product did, thanks to the rapidly moving rate of technology and individual models no longer being made. Insurance acts as a guarantee that you won’t be left out in the cold.

You may need to take out cover if:

  • Your manufacturer’s guarantee is about to run out. Leaving your appliance uninsured can be costly should something abruptly go wrong.
  • Your fridge freezer is expensive. Compare the overall cost of your chosen extended warranty policy against replacing your appliance, bearing in mind what a similar model would cost in a few years’ time. If you wouldn’t be able to exchange it for a much lesser price, insurance provides you with added security. This is particularly relevant if your appliance cost thousands of pounds.
  • You’d need it again ASAP. Insurance would prevent you having to save up for a new appliance, which could take a while. You can have a good-as-new or even a brand-new appliance before you even start to miss it.

How Much Does Fridge Freezer Insurance Cost?

Prices start at about £2 per month for the most basic single-appliance insurance. This can increase upwards of £20 for more extensive cover.

Fees depend on your exact product (original price/brand and make/age), as well as which level of aftercare you choose and any limits which may be in place regarding maximum claim amounts and the number of callouts you can make within a year.

Before you take out a policy, ask if it would be cheaper to pay annually or quarterly compared to monthly. Some policy providers may add interest on to pay-monthly options, mainly if there is the option to cancel your policy at any time. Companies like long-term commitment, so paying upfront for a three-year plan could be cheaper than paying monthly over three years if you’re in a position to do so.

Why Doesn’t My Home Insurance Cover My Fridge Freezer?

Home insurance policies will probably not cover you for mechanical and electrical breakdowns and faults, as the purpose of them is protection against theft, fire and flood damage.

There may be some exceptions to this rule, so check with your provider first before you go ahead and take out a separate plan.

Is a Single- or Multi-Appliance Policy Best for my Fridge-Freezer?

Multi-appliance plans are designed to make your life easier. They protect various appliances around your home for one set price, so there isn’t a ridiculous amount of paperwork and direct debit payments to keep on top of. There may be lower thresholds in place regarding pay-outs and aftercare, however.

Specialist kitchen-only plans are available, which will cover only white goods such as fridges, washing machines and ovens. These are worth considering if the other electronics in your home are already protected under specialist gadget insurance, or if your white goods are merely your biggest priority.

Single-appliance policies usually have much higher claims limits and are more likely to insure high-end products which may have cost thousands of pounds. They are available from most retailers and also directly from the manufacturer, acting as an extended warranty after your guarantee runs out. You will be offered one of these when you buy your product, but don’t be pressured into accepting it on the spot – always shop around first for the cheapest fridge freezer insurance which suits you best.
